Text 10 Dec Snap Happy

I’ve been thinking about getting a new digital camera. My family owns a Canon Powershot S50, but the thing is a beast to carry around as a point-and-shoot. I’ve been really satisfied with the performance of the S50 so I was happy to find out that Canon recently revived its S-series with the release of the Powershot S90. It’s shaved off some of the weight and size from the S50.

The new S90 has a pop-up flash, and includes an interesting control ring on the lens that can be used to adjust settings like zoom, focus, and aperture, on the fly with presets. This camera looks be in direct competition with the Panasonic LX3.

The LX3 has a hotshoe, is capable of shooting 720p video, and boasts better light and continuous shooting speed than the S90. But it’s bigger, heavier, and gives up a lot of length in exchange; 24-60mm compared to the Canon’s 28-105mm.

The Canon S90 comes in at $499, while the Panasonic LX3 costs $599. I’ve read the comparison over at neutralday and both cameras look solid, so it may just come down to the $100 price difference. Any opinions on these cameras? Other recommendations?
